A Brief History Of Silverton

Sitting at 9318 feet and nestled in the caldera of an ancient volcano, Silverton is the perfect backdrop for the World's Highest Harley® Store. Settled in 1873 by men of adventurous spirit looking to make their fortunes in silver and gold, the town remains today as rugged and full of unique individuals as it was in those early days.

Early access to Silverton was from the east on a rough wagon road over Stony Pass. The road was so steep that wagons often had to be assisted with block and tackle equipment to make the grades. The railroad opened up the area in 1882. Ore was then hauled to the smelter in Durango for processing. At the height of productivity, mines like the Yankee Girl, the National Belle, the Silver Bell and the Genessee produced more than $25 million of gold and silver. Today a tour of gulches and passes around Silverton easily gives a traveler a sense of what those early miners experienced. The Old One Hundred Mine boarding house in Cunningham Gulch still clings to the summit of Galena Mountain. Tramways still sway high above rivers and roads outside of town.

A walk down Greene or Blair streets shows buildings that still stand from those glory days. With Banks and Bordellos, the community of Silverton was an early boomtown of the uncivilized west, where the likes of Wyatt Earp or Doc Holiday passed through. Although illegal, gambling and the bordellos were tolerated as long as they stayed east of Greene Street. Blair Street also hosted a few stills during prohibition. A gunfight or two, along with some serious posse action, adds to the colorful past of a true mining town. Today those buildings are shops and restaurants where locals and visitors alike stop in for an easy conversation before heading out to enjoy one of the most untamed landscapes in the lower 48.

Today active mining is a thing of the past, yet every August families with a mining heritage gather to compete in Silverton's Hardrocker Holidays. The event showcases skills in singleman drilling, handmucking, machine drilling, handsteeling and single jacking. Its a weekend where the proud traditions of mining are showcased to the next generation of hardy mountain people.

Another local tradition comes with the Great Western Rocky Mountain Brass Band Festival. The very first brass band played in Silverton in 1884 and summer Sundays at 6 pm the town's brass bands meet to entertain the crowd. You may see everything from kids with ice cream to oldtimers in period costumes. The third weekend of August draws musicians from all over the country to participate in the festivities.

Silverton is home to many festive weekends. Their famous Fourth of July celebration includes the Rhubarb Festival and fireworks display. You can also enjoy the Hardrock 100 mile run, the Quilt Show, the Iron Horse Bike Classic, and the Skijoring competition in the winter. It is the most popular ride destination for riders who attend the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally. It's a must see when you ride the Million Dollar HIghway.

Almost 150 years after early wanderers explored their way to the valley, Silverton remains a town of spirited individuals. It's unique charm, local history and stunning scenery make it the perfect place to visit on your next journey.
